Increasing complexity of integrated urban design processes
Limited Capacity seats available

LECTURE

As early as since 1989, KCAP Architects&Planners focuses on sustainable neighbourhood development with a strong social and health agenda. With GWL Terrein in Amsterdam, we pioneered in designing a car-free living environment with a strong sense of community. Today, we have devised a multidisciplinary design approach to confront the increasing complexity of integrated urban design processes. Exemplary for this approach is the CO2-neutral FredericiaC project in Denmark, which was designed in a participatory process. This transformation of a polluted former harbour area into a vital new city district includes themes like climate change adaptation, urban prosperity, energy efficiency, urban farming, temporary landscape and social cohesion. As a leading Rotterdam practice we can draw lessons from this project for Rotterdam.

Food intake and healthy weight: shared responsibilities
Limited Capacity seats available

Obesity is a public health problem emerging in cities throughout the world. Biological factors which are causing obesity are depending on menu and appetite. These are not just individual choices. Consumers are depending on the supply of healthy food by food producers and shops. Could a supermarket chain take responsibility by educating its younger staff members to become lifestyle coaches for their peers?

The 3D City: a live example from Rotterdam
Limited Capacity seats available

ONLINE EXCURSION, THROUGH INTERACTIVE DISPLAY OF 3D MODEL

Using urban data from various sources makes it possible to model cities in 3D representations, in which detailed information about, among other things air quality, sound levels, visitor streams, economic structure and other factors can be made visible. It is expected that within 10 years all city planning and development will use such 3D representations. In this online excursion, Roland and Jantien will show and discuss a particular 3D representation of a neighborhood in the city of Rotterdam. The excursion will provide a hands-on understanding of what 3D city models entail, as well as a systematic reflection on their potential and challenges.

The Healthy City, from Cure to Care
Limited Capacity seats available

PRESENTATION

The population of Utrecht is considered one of the healthiest in the Netherlands. However, within the city there are stark contrasts. In addition, and strictly within its current city limits, Utrecht expects to grow from 330,000 to 400,000 inhabitants by 2030. IABR–Atelier Utrecht, set up by the IABR and the Municipality of Utrecht, has identified critical success factors for a healthy an socially inclusive city. What happens if, instead of concentrating on the institutions that take care of the city’s sick and elderly, we redirect our focus to how the city, by promoting public and semi-public facilities, can contribute to the (future) health of its inhabitants? Hetty Linden, Public Health Director at the Municipality of Utrecht and Joachim Declerck, lead designer of the IABR–Atelier Utrecht, will reflect on the research and design results of the Atelier and share their lessons learned.

Memorizing Bombed Cities
Limited Capacity filling up

RESEARCH WORKSHOP

During this workshop, attendees will explore how city bombings during World War II are commemorated today, by looking at family memories in contemporary Germany, and online eyewitness testimonies about the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. The speakers will do this by presenting examples and engaging with the audience through discussion.

---
Attendees could prepare this session by browsing one or more relevant online interview collections:

The small interview collection about the Rotterdam bombing (in Dutch): http://navigator.brandgrens.nl/navigator/interviews.php. Here you find a portal to 10 video interviews with eye witnesses of the German bombardment on Rotterdam in May 1940.

An example with English subtitles is https://zwangsarbeit-archiv.de/archiv/interviews/za570?locale=en. This is an interview with Judith Altman, a forced labourer who was stationed in a camp in Gelsenkirchen while it was bombed. The interview stems from an German online interview collection – Archiv Zwangsarbeit 1939-1945 – containing about 600 interviews with former forced laborers from 26 countries. This collection is accessible to anyone, but registration is required.

Another relevant and freely accessible collection with English subtitles is http://www.bosnianmemories.org/?page_id=18, a portal to 99 interviews with eye witnesses of the Balkan war in Bosnia.

All three collections are keyword searchable.

WORKSHOP, INTERVIEWS OF SPEAKERS AND AUDIENCE BY MODERATOR

BOLD Cities is a new inter-university center from Leiden University, TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam that conducts big data research to help find solutions for urban problems. In this workshop the main researchers will discuss how big, open and linked data can help to answer urban issues regarding traffic flows, the quality of schools in various neighborhoods, how the neighborhood influences the health of its residents, the relevance of social media during large-scale cultural events, interaction between citizens, opportunities for establishing local businesses, energy consumption and air quality. Ethical dilemmas are a common theme running through these issues, especially with respect to the privacy of citizens, and the ownership of their data. Workshop attendants will be invited to share their knowledge, experience and views as well.

Beyond Gentrification
Limited Capacity filling up

EXCURSION TO EXTERNAL LOCATION

The transformation of Katendrecht in Rotterdam, the grand-scale redevelopment of the inner harbour and industrial site into an urban residential and living area, is characterized by a long lead time, and a large and diverse group of stakeholders who determine the success of the present and the foreseeable future. What can we learn of the collective history? Can we think of a feasible and practicable model in which the local value added and existing quality are taken as starting points?

The session Beyond Gentrification explores a new development logic that fits the Next Economy that respects the needs of the real estate developer, both old and new residents, and entrepreneurs. A context where new collectives of individuals and small players, DIY builders and real estate developers, can exist side by side.

The session takes place in the middle of the exhibition of IABR-2016-THE NEXT ECONOMY and is organized by Heijmans, AIR and the IABR.

Is it possible to design a happy city?
Limited Capacity seats available

Is it possible to design a happy city? Contemporary cities are great in caring for many basic human needs collectively, such as safety, housing and health. More abstract aspects of life, however, have a more individual character; it remains your now responsibility to explore your talents, be creative and live a meaningful and happy life. The Innovationlab – The Happy City believes that happiness is more collectively pliable than we think and that the city plays a major role in this.

The InnovationLAB De Gelukkige Stad, initiated by urban designer Robbert Jan van der Veen (1981) and architecture student Stella Groenewoud, brings professors, Ph.D researchers and Honours Program students from different fields of study together to think about this and design all sorts of urban interventions. Four student projects focusing on Rotterdam will be presented along with a general and inspiring talk on the Happy City by Robbert Jan.

WORKSHOP

Assisted-living and nursing homes have changed dramatically over the past several decades. These changes have been driven by government regulations and elderly people continue living at home as long as possible. Living independently and nursing homes thus seem worlds apart, but looks can be deceiving. Veldacademie made an urban inventory of assisted-living and nursing homes in Rotterdam as well as in Amsterdam and examines the meaning of these facilities for the neighbourhood and its residents. Also explored is the possible transformation of these homes into houses for older people. The role of housing the elderly, providing care, and enabling the elderly to live independently for longer within their own community, placed in a new perspective.

Historicizing Popular Uses of the Past

LECTURE FOLLOWED BY Q&A

“Heritage” is a version of the past that belongs to us.  But a changing “us” also changes the nature of popular representations and uses of the past.  As contemporary cities in Europe and North America undergo radical demographic change, how do urbanites’ memories of wars negotiate the boundary between nationalism and cosmopolitanism and what are the implications for history education?

Eat well young, grow up strong
Limited Capacity seats available

From the history of food and feeding the city one can learn about how to feed the city in the future and to make the city more healthy again. The last 20 years lifestyle has been changed markedly  leading to an increase of obesity already in young children and an increase of chronic diseases in the elderly. These chronic diseases can be prevented with a change in another style of living and food consumption. Food intake of children and adults nowadays is totally unbalanced and the consumption of vegetables and healthy food almost nothing compared to unhealthy sugar containing foods is almost. We can learn from the past and we have to look rapidly for changes in the future starting with the youngest children in the community. We have to change current lifestyle and creating more awareness and education is mandatory. The unique collaboration of Erasmus University Medical Center, the city of Rotterdam and the producers of vegetables enables us to make a real change in the health of the city.

Nervousnet: co-creating the data city
LECTURE FOLLOWED BY Q&A

The ‘Internet of Things’ is both a buzz-word and a reality. Experts estimate that in the future there will be 7 times more connected things than people. For cities these connections offer unprecedented advantages to monitor and adjust city operations in real time. While currently the big IT corporations are pushing city governments to acquire their hardware and software, the Nervousnet developed by Professor Helbing and his team is run  as a 'Citizen Web', built and managed by its users. Inspired by Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap, people, companies and devices will be able to interact with Nervousnet in 3 ways: by contributing data; by analysing the crowd-sourced datasets; and by sharing code and ideas. The aim is to yield societal benefits, business opportunities and jobs. Professor Helbing will address the basic components and principles of Nervousnet, and show examples of its usage and benefits for future cities.  Nervousnet is affiliated with BOLD Cities.
