IAB recommendations 2015: Social Development & Responsibility:
Develop a Rotterdam social contract to declare a social ethic for the emerging economy’

Many people think that ‘the next economy’ is only about economy and technology; it is so much more! This IAB expert-panel / workshop will focus on the ‘other’ side of ‘the next economy’. It will focus on the human side of economic development in an urban environment.

  • The role of cities vs nation states is changing. Cities become the nodes of innovation and economic development. The City Executive becomes more and more important;
  • The ‘next economy’ will lead to more uncertainties than ever before. New social division will take place. There will be new ‘have nots’, new ‘know nots’ and people ‘having no access to…’

It is time to have a fundamental discussion about a new social contract. With a Social Contract we mean a set of (ethic) rights, obligations and rules of engagement between:

  • the city executives
  • the citizens
  • local companies
  • employers
  • employees

What are the rights and obligations of all these actors? What can we; what may we expect from each other?
